Reflecting the Franciscans' enduring commitment to service, the Social Service Group continues to empower students to support the underprivileged and engage with the community's needs. The group not only facilitates training to enhance members' communication and organizational abilities but also actively involves them in a variety of service-oriented activities.
Our collaboration with the Caritas Community Centre – Caine Road has delivered numerous community service trainings and initiatives targeting the elderly. Significant projects include conducting a workshop focused on mobile phone applications like the LeaveHomeSafe app to help seniors stay connected, and organizing festive activities such as a Christmas Fun Day, complete with games and a photo session for the elderly.
The years 2024 and 2025 witnessed further expansion of our efforts. We hosted a pivotal joint-club talk, where students gained insights into social enterprises in Hong Kong, with special speakers from the Home Affairs Department and their mascot, Bloomy. This event significantly heightened student awareness and engagement with local social initiatives.
Additionally, our support for the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital through a charity game booth was a profound learning experience for our students. By raising funds for the hospital's crucial services, students were able to recognize and appreciate the vital contributions made by healthcare practitioners in Hong Kong. This activity highlighted the importance of the youth's role in supporting the medical industry and serving the wider community. It also fostered a deeper understanding among students of the critical impact of healthcare services, especially in challenging times.
Our Chinese New Year Charity Bazaar, co-organized with HKSKH Holy Nativity Church Ming Wah Centre, brought festive joy to the elderly at Meng Wah Complex in Shau Kei Wan. This event was not just about providing access to traditional treats and groceries; it enabled students to offer personalized assistance, such as carrying groceries and accompanying the elderly on shopping trips, fostering a greater sense of community and intergenerational connection.
Moreover, our commitment to environmental stewardship was highlighted through a collaborative initiative with St. Joseph's College to organize a beach cleanup at Shek O beach. This activity united our students in a common goal to tackle environmental issues firsthand. Armed with gloves and bags, students meticulously scoured the beach, collecting debris that threatens marine life and beach aesthetics. This hands-on experience not only helped in beautifying the beach but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards preserving our natural surroundings. It provided a practical lesson on the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems and the importance of sustainable living practices.
